At 1st-direct we have over 30 years experience in swimming pool construction and design. We go to great lengths to ensure the pool products selected for our online store are of the highest quality, reliable and provide value for money.
We have used our expertise and experience to select the best swimming pool pumps and pool filters. These are essential components in every swimming pool installation.
Your swimming pool pump is responsible for circulating your pool water, ensuring your water treatment chemicals are evenly distributed and preventing stagnation. Your pool filter also contributes toward the even distribution of pool chemicals. But the filter is primarily required to filter debris from your pool water, keeping it clean, healthy and usable.
If you have any questions regarding swimming pool pumps or filters please do not hesitate to contact us at 1st-direct. We will be pleased to answer your queries.
Choosing the right pump and filter size for your pool is important. As a guide, you need to turn over your entire volume of water within 6 hours if the pool is indoors, or 8 hours if outdoors. So for example, if your pool volume is 50 cubic meters:
Indoors 50 / 6 = 8.34 You should choose a pump capable of at least 8.34 m³ per hour flow rate.
Outdoors 50 / 8 = 6.25 You should choose a pump capable of at least 6.25 m³ per hour flow rate.
You should also consider the number of shell fittings you pool has. As a general rule, think of each inlet, skimmer, or drain as capable of 5 m³ per hour. So for the above examples, you would need at least 2 inlets and 2 outlets which would give you the ability to fit a pump of up to 10 m³ per hour. The last consideration when choosing the right size of pump is to be aware of the distance from the pump to the pool, and elevation. Any distance over 10 meters or if the pump is higher than the top of the pool, you should consider getting a slightly more powerful pump to combat possible velocity loss.
Once have chosen your pump, choosing the right size of filter will be a much easier process. Simply ensure that the maximum flow rate of the filter is equal or greater than the flow rate of the pump. So now you know what size pump and filter you need, which make of pump and filter do you buy?
In terms of pump, there are many to choose from to suit all budgets. The price of any given pump reflects its build quality and performance. Our best sellers are the Hydroswim HGS pumps and the Sta-rite 5P2R pumps. Both come with the original European motor fitted (French for the HGS and Belgium for the Sta-Rite) and can give many years of reliable service (25 years is common for the Sta-Rite).
As with all pool equipment, poor water management can cause damage to a pump’s internals and cause premature failure, so this should be a priory. Ph levels especially should be kept an eye on. If you have a salt water pool, the Sta-Rite is the best pump to go for from our range, as it is able to deal with those conditions.
When choosing your filter, once you know the size to get, there is a further choice of top mounted multiport valve (MPV) or side mounted. In terms of operation, there’s little between them. Highlighted differences are:
• If you suffer from air locks, this configuration is much easier to bleed.
• If floor space is an issue, these will take up less room
• If height is an issue, these have a lover profile
• The inspection hatch is handy to see inside the filter, and makes media change an easier job
• The MPV is generally easier to replace if needs be in the future
